AMEE 2010 Awards and Prizes

The Miriam Friedman Ben-David Award

In memory of the late Miriam Friedman Ben David, AMEE created a New Educator’s Award which was presented for the first time in 2008.

AMEE invites nominations for this award for those deemed to have made a significant contribution to teaching in a relatively short time. The prize is free registration for AMEE 2011, plus £1,000.

Being new to the discipline of medical education can be hard work. New educators often find themselves caught in the frustration of having gained some insight into the field of medical education through courses, conferences or studying the literature and then faced with the difficulty of facilitating this new knowledge to their local context, or translating it into practice. In addition, the profession of medical educator is generally characterised by being a sole consultant in education among medical professionals. One of the ‘trademarks’ of the late Miriam Friedman Ben David, an experienced and much-admired educator, was to help new educators cope with their role and coach them in the process of professional development as an educator.

The Miriam Friedman Ben David New Educator’s Award will go to a person who has made an extraordinary effort and contribution within the field of medical education in terms of design/implementation of innovative methods or approaches to teaching, curriculum, courses, assessment, evaluation of education or faculty development. This may be in undergraduate or postgraduate medical education, or in continuing professional development, and may take place at a local, regional, national or international level. There is no restriction as to the age of the recipient, only that he/she has had no more than five years’ experience in an educator role.

Candidates may be nominated by anyone – by a head of department, a supervisor, a peer or a student. A one-page description of the background and contribution, and a short CV of the person nominated should be sent to the AMEE Office by email (amee@dundee.ac.uk), fax (+44 (0)1382 381987) or regular mail to AMEE, Tay Park House, 484 Perth Road, Dundee DD2 1LR, UK) by the 31 May 2010.

The winner of the Award will be announced at AMEE 2010, on Wednesday 8 September during the final session.
